In a recent video on her YouTube channel, Zack George, the highest ranked CrossFit athlete in the UK, invited professional model and powerlifter Paul Olima to try out her first CrossFit workout. “It’s not usually a gym,” George says. “He’s strong; he was back to 205kg when he came in, so it’s going to be fun.”
George begins training Olima through his first attempt to throw himself at the bar. Despite being a newcomer, the lifter can immediately snatch 70kg and, after a couple of rounds, is ready to gain weight and try 100kg. “Most CrossFit athletes will train for years to achieve a 100-pound snatch,” says George. “The first time Paul snatches it and he will.”
Olima isn’t able to complete the muscle boot, and this is the first time she really starts to suspect that working with George will be harder than it looks. “I usually do 3 dead weights, rest for about 5 minutes and then go back to doing weights, so it’s a little different.” He says. “It’s a shock to the body.”
After the punches, George describes the 2 WODs they will do: 4 burpees on dumbbells, 4 muscle bars, 40 double basses, performed for 10 rounds. Then, after a short break, they take the second WOD: a sprint of 20 cal on the assault bike and 20 fingers on the bar, for 6 rounds.
George congratulates Olima for the good she did in her first CrossFit workout, but Olima laughs. “He’s being nice, mate,” he says to the camera. “I’m about to die!”
