An Olympic Boxer on How to Punch Like Heavyweight Deontay Wilder

May 27, 2021 by Staff Reporter

Tony Jeffries, a former Olympic medalist and professional boxer who retired undefeated back in 2012, regularly shares his expertise and insight in tutorial videos on his YouTube channel, where he guides newcomers to the sport on their sparring techniques and how to best prepare themselves for a fight. In one video, he offers his advice on how to increase the effectiveness and strength of your punches—and in another, he focuses on how to emulate the formidable punching power of Deontay Wilder, who held the title of heavyweight champion from 2015 until 2020.

“Well, you can’t punch as hard as Deontay Wilder,” he says. “That man’s power is unbelievable… We’ve all got limits in our speed, in our punching power, in our strength. There are a few things you can do to increase your punching power right now.”

Transfer your weight

If you’re not shifting your weight into a punch, you’re not going to be getting maximum power into it. “Deontay Wilder is good at this,” says Jeffries. “When he does it, he really turns into it, gets his weight into it, and that’s one of the reasons he gets maximum power into the punch.”

Step into the punch

Another way to ensure you’re getting your bodyweight into the punch is to step into the movement as well as transferring your weight.

Relax

“If you’re relaxed, you’re going to be faster,” says Jeffries. “The faster you are, the more powerful you are. My back is relaxed, my shoulders are relaxed; the only thing that’s tight is my fist.”

Fully extend your arm

“Wilder is great at this with his straight punches,” says Jeffries. “A fully extended, strong punch, that will help you get more power into the punch.”
