Flames spread from truck to sun room of Murrysville hair salon

July 22, 2021 by Staff Reporter

A parked truck caught fire early Thursday evening in Murrysville, spreading flames to the rear corner of a hair salon along Route 22 in Murrysville.

While the truck, an F-150, was totaled, damage inside the salon was minimal and was limited to a sun room, according to Sardis Fire Chief Cody Paiano.

Lynn Antonucci, one of the owners of the Zegarelli and Antonucci Hair Studio, said the sun room was used for drying clients’ hair. She said she became aware of the fire shortly before 6:30 p.m., and the staff and a client were able to get out of the single-story building without injury.

She said the salon has a staff of five and leases the building from DeCesare Corp., which she said has offered to find another space for the business, if needed.

A man who identified himself as the owner of the truck but declined to reveal his name said he suffered minor burns but didn’t intend to seek treatment. He said his family had arrived for an appointment at a chiropractic office next door when he was alerted that his vehicle was smoking.

He said he failed in an attempt to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher.

It wasn’t clear what caused the fire in the truck.

“It was 17 minutes and the fire was deemed under control,” Paiano said of the salon. “There would be very minimal smoke damage if any. We were able to get it vented out of there really quick.”

Murrysville, Export and Monroeville were among other fire departments that responded.

Fire and other emergency vehicles occupied the eastbound lanes of Route 22 during the firefighting effort. Eastbound traffic was rerouted along Old William Penn Highway.
