COLUMBIANA – Local healthcare workers received well-deserved recognition for their efforts at a special lunch on Wednesday June 30th at the Grande Hall in Old Mill Square.
The Shelby County Chamber’s Seventh Annual Healthcare Professionals Luncheon of the Year highlighted those who have made outstanding contributions to their communities and achieved remarkable health care goals.
Before the award ceremony, Dr. John Croushorn, an ambulance doctor at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster, in a video message about his experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he first treated patients diagnosed with the virus before fighting it himself months later.
“I have a phrase that I love, even though I don’t know who to attribute to: ‘Expect nothing and appreciate everything,’” said Croushorn. “That describes a good perspective on my year last year during the COVID pandemic. Not only have I been a doctor treating patients during the COVID pandemic, but I am also a survivor of COVID-19 and have been a patient in our own hospital. “
Croushorn also shared the importance of serving others through leadership.
“I believe that serving others is the greatest pleasure and satisfaction in life,” said Croushorn. “Although I could serve others, I received services from others during my illness. Service is a rewarding way of life, and at the end of the day, when you’ve put your head down and spent your life on others, your satisfaction is difficult to put into words. “
Croushorn emphasized the choices one can make each day to honor and uplift others through their words, thoughts, and actions.
“I believe we should serve. We can choose to hope and we can choose to give ourselves to others, ”he said. “It’s very simple: Appreciating and serving others.”
