Man Up Tasmanian looks to grow presence on the Coast with more support | The Advocate

June 5, 2021 by Staff Reporter

news, local-news,

Mental health social group Man Up Tasmania has forged a steady presence on the Coast, and is now looking to create a Volunteer Peer Support Program known as ‘MUT’s Mates’. They’ve put out a call for volunteers who will attend male-heavy community events as representatives of Man Up, to get more conversations happening. Founder Aaron Meldrum said the idea was to approach men and boys where they want to be, to make these topics more approachable. “By situating ourselves where (they) already are, we hope to help educate and inform them about the various services and supports that are available on the North-West Coast,” he said. “Our volunteers are not to be seen as counsellors, but more like well-informed mates, that can provide basic level support and guidance where needed.” He said already there’s been a great response from the community putting their hands up, but there was always room for more. “We believe that in general, people are genuinely interested in helping their community and a lot of men see this as a valuable and easy way to get involved,” Mr Meldrum said.
