June is National Men’s Health Month, which is a time to raise awareness about men’s health care and focus on encouraging boys, men and their families to practice and implement healthy living decisions. . This is important to keep in mind because many men do not recognize how the passage of time affects their metabolism and fitness.
Don Schiller, 83, lived through this same scenario despite remaining active throughout his life. With the high weight, he faced the possibility of a spine surgery to relieve chronic back and neck pain. Instead, he decided to first contact Nick Brown, director of health and fitness at Touchmark Health & Fitness Club.
“I had never thought about using a personal trainer, but I sat down with Nick to analyze it and told him I wanted to lose 30 pounds and keep them out afterwards. I wanted to resume the daily exercises, but Nick asked me if I would consider changing my routine. I said I would do what he recommended to me because I wanted his knowledge and experience. I just wanted to be able to exercise for the next ten years or so, ”says Schiller.
Together, he and Brown completed a series of assessments and built a wellness plan designed for Schiller to achieve his goal of losing fat and replacing it with lean muscle. Formerly an everyday swimmer, Schiller was surprised when Brown suggested swimming only two days a week and supplementing his regimen with strength training and cardio on the running and rowing machine.
See well-being in a comprehensive way
Brown’s dietary changes were another surprise. “Maintaining physical activity is very important, but you also need to feed your body with healthy foods that won’t pack unnecessary pounds,” Brown explains. Because Schiller lives in Touchmark, Brown was able to speak with Touchmark executive chef Erik Stieber as he planned the suggestions.
Schiller says: “We changed my diet, especially for breakfast. I can take yogurt, granola, egg whites (I had never heard of egg whites before) and reduced the bread. Now I eat avocados and curd, and I don’t have to eat the same thing every day. It varies what I eat in the same way I do with exercise.
Regain control and see results
After six months working with Brown, Schiller has lost weight and managed to keep him out. He doesn’t need surgery either. He regards Brown as his long-term health wellness partner.
“I’m ready to start doing more things and the other day I told Nick that I want to sit down with him again and re-evaluate him. I have achieved my goal of losing up to 150 pounds. I can control my weight and stay there, and now what is the next step to continue? It has been a fantastic experience. I wasn’t easy to convince, but now that I’ve done it and seen it work, I’m telling my story to other people. “
The power to act
Both Schiller and Brown recognize the importance of fully committing to a lifestyle change once you embark on it. Brown says, “Don is incredibly dedicated to the exercise program we built. He adopted assessments and motion screens along the way. Most importantly, it focuses on specific movement patterns for strength training twice a week, varies cardiovascular training three times a week, and performs mobility exercises daily. ”
It may be time for men who feel on the plane of their well-being to explore working with a professional. There is no single fitness routine that works for everyone or even for all phases of life. This month, embrace the Wear BLUE® awareness campaign, created by Men’s Health Network to raise awareness about the importance of men’s health and encourage men to live longer and healthier lives.
