Laura Van Wyk Postma, 82, of Orange City, died Friday, May 28, 2021, at UnityPoint Health St. Lukes in Sioux City surrounded by her family.
Laura Anna, the daughter of John Ernest and Emma (Reyelts) Meyer, was born on Jan. 8, 1939, in Boyden. Her family lived on a farm between Boyden and Hull, where she spent her childhood and attended St. Johns Lutheran Grade School. She graduated from the Hull Public High School, where she fine-tuned her beautiful singing voice heard at contests, in church, special events, or just around the house. She loved music and you were blessed if she shared that voice with you.
Laura was married to Gene Van Wyk on June 5, 1959, in Boyden. Together they made their home in Le Mars where they raised their three children. In addition to being a wife and mother, she worked part-time for an insurance company, a chiropractic office, and the Hallmark store all while making sure she had time to attend each and every sporting event, band concert, and activity her children where in, cheering them on all the way.
Gene died May 23, 1992, in Le Mars, after nearly 33 years of marriage.
On April 2, 1994, she was married to Clarence Postma in Le Mars. They made their home in Orange City and enjoyed their retirement years together. Laura was blessed to have had two very special marriages with husbands that loved her well.
Postma was currently a member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church and a former member of the Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Le Mars. She liked to travel, play card games, volunteer, bowl, participate in Bible studies, sing, and bake. Whenever you would visit, you could smell one of her amazing baked goods just out of the oven. If you try really hard, you can almost smell her cookies, German chocolate cake, or a new recipe she tried from the Cooking Channel.
Family time was incredibly important to Laura, known as Grandma Great to the littles, she deeply loved her siblings, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and time with any of them lit her up. Most important to her Laura loved Jesus and she modeled that love for all.
She is survived by her husband of more than 27 years, Clarence, of Orange City; a daughter, Sherrie Schuck, of West Des Moines; two sons and their wives, Bryon and Kelly Van Wyk, and Scott and Laura Van Wyk, all of Le Mars; six grandchildren, Justin (Calynn) Schuck, Ashley (Mike) Petersen, Chris Van Wyk, Kim (Huston) Heitkamp, Josh (Angela Moore) Van Wyk, and Amy (Logan) Bigley; nine great-grandchildren, Lillian, Xander, Jackson, Ava, Jonas, MaKenna, Kenzington, Olivia, and Finnley; two sisters and their husbands, Carol and Roger Drenth, of Sheldon; and Lois and Jim Lockhorst, of Elk Point, South Dakota; three sisters-in-law, Magdalene Doorenbos, of Sioux Center; Ileen Meyer, of Boyden; and Carol Meyer, of Hull; a brother-in-law, Harvey Klein, of Rock Valley; and many nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by Clarences children, Randy and Barb Postma, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; Myron and Shari Postma, of Rehoboth, New Mexico; Lynn Postma, and Arden and Deb Postma, all of Grand Rapids; his grandchildren, Matt (Jana) Postma, Stephen Postma, Chris (Rachael) Postma, Joel Postma, Dawn (Brett) Cherney, Tara Postma, Ryan (Kelsey) Postma, Tyler (Sally) Holstege, Grant (Katie) Holstege, Jillian Postma, and Isaac Postma; and his two great-grandchildren, Edan and Thea.
In addition to her parents and first husband, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Dean Schuck; four sisters, Augusta Meyer, Elva (Albert) Mooney, Marion (Ed) Meyer, and Pauline Klein; and three brothers, Rudolph Meyer, Marvin Meyer, and Wilfred Meyer.
There will be a funeral service at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 2, at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. John Klompien and the Rev. Al Kuiper will officiate.
Following a time of lunch and fellowship, interment will take place at the Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation with the family was 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
