Netflix has just released some new footage offering a first look at the iconic 80s cartoon character He-Man, who has been resurrected for the remake of Masters of the Universe, led by cult director Kevin Smith. In the photos, He-Man (who becomes the thinnest Prince Adam into a superhero with the words “by the power of Grayskull”) is easily recognized from the classic television series, albeit with sharper lines and , certainly even bigger muscles.
“I ate 12,000 calories a day and pumped iron 25/7 for a year in preparation for this role,” joked voice actor Christopher Wood, who plays the beloved hero of the new show. “It wasn’t until I saw these photos that I realized I was excited. I wish someone had told me … FOR IT SEEMS INCREINGBLE !!!!”
Wood added how significant it has been to give his voice to a project with such a huge legacy in pop culture, and recalled that he had played with He-Man and Castle Grayskull toys for just five years. “I’ve been doing the He-Man voice since I was little,” he said. “Now they pay me for it.”
Masters of the Universe comes after the recent revival of Netflix and Dreamworks by She-Ra, a property that began its life as a He-Man spin-off centered on Prince Adam’s sister, Adora. That reboot significantly altered the design of She-Ra’s characters, provoking resistance from fans of the original, but ultimately won critical acclaim for its inclusive and diverse narrative.

The Masters of the Universe definitely seems to be closer to the artwork and sensitivity of the ’80s cartoon — boring biceps and all — but fans will have to wait until the first part falls on July 23rd. to see for themselves whether He-Man, Skeletor, and co. they are the same ones they remember.
