Sam Maqaba wants men to create support groups for each other.
A men’s health seminar was held at the Welgedacht Stadium on Friday morning.
The event, sponsored by Multi Players Soccer Academy and Physio 360, was aimed at encouraging men to seek help for health-related matters without feeling ashamed.
Sam Maqabe of Multi Players Academy was inspired to hold the seminar after he suffered a stroke last year.

“The right side of my body was numb. I went to the hospital but none of them knew what had caused the stroke. I don’t want anyone to go through that kind of stress.
“There are many challenges we face as men, but we are too afraid to ask for help. I want to create a space where men can share their feelings.”
Although much of the seminar focused on mental health, a mobile HIV testing station was made available.
A counselling service was also offered.

“There is a stigma that men in our society face when it comes to health issues,” said Palesa Conco from Physio 360.
“Most clinics focus their attention on women and their babies, which results in men not going to the clinics at all. This is a big problem.
“It’s also very important to educate them on certain diseases like stroke, heart disease, HIV and mental health.”
Maqabe encouraged the attendees to create support systems for each other and educate themselves on matters regarding mental health.
