Freeform’s latest hit series, Cruel Summer, has been dominating the airwaves. If you don’t know, the show follows the lives of two girls, Kate Wallis and Jeanette Turner, for a period of three years in the 1990s. Wallis is kidnapped by Vice President Martin Harris and, when she escapes, accuses Jeanette of not reporting the Kate’s captivity.
I guess the most important plot of this series is whether or not Jeanette knew Kate’s captivity. But rather, what is most important — dare we say shocking — is Martin Harris, and how he has methodically just turned Kate into his perfect victim. He looks almost like a real-life serial killer, right?
Harris’ character is completely fictional. But it is inspired by real-life serial killers, hence some of these similarities. Blake Lee, who plays Harris in the series, revealed to E! The news that saw numerous real crime series, specifically The Ted Bundy Tapes, helped him get into the character. “What I think I got out of watching that documentary was seeing this guy, who repeatedly did the worst things and kept getting away with it for so long, and who would come out of it,” he said. say like, “Oh, wait, he can’t be this guy. He’s the cutest, he’s handsome.”

Aside from Ted Bundy, Lee also watched the Netflix kidnapping series, including Abducted in Plain Sight, to get a better idea of how his character can lure Kate to a false sense of security.
And while Lee said he loved playing Harris, he did admit that acting like a serial killer is an emotional and mental challenge. “We were dealing with very, very serious issues, and so you know, sometimes it was very heavy,” he said. “Sometimes it was exhausting. It was very emotional.”
