TOLANIA – The advisory working group on mental health and substance use has organized its officers, begun its meetings and begun its work, city officials said.
WHAT: The mental health and substance use counseling group is up and running.
WHEN: First and third Monday of each month at 7 p.m.
MISSION: Create a multidisciplinary team to assess the response of the city and the community and the resources available to address mental health and substance use, and make recommendations to the City Council.
The working group will meet on the first and third Monday of each month at 7 p.m.
Its members include several residents and two city council members, John Reagan and Kurt Schenher, and three members of the Board of Education, Madhu Renduchintala, Jacob Marie and Anthony Holt.
The group’s mission is to create a multidisciplinary team to assess the response of the city and the community and the resources available to address issues of mental health and substance use in Tolland, and to make recommendations to the City Council based on its evaluation, officials said. .
At its last meeting earlier this month, the working group discussed the issues facing the working group and where it should focus its priorities.
Renduchintala suggested the incorporation of school superintendent Walter Willett to provide information on substance abuse problems within the school system, according to the minutes of the meeting.
Marie said she would like the working group to start collecting data to properly diagnose the problems facing the community.
Reagan suggested that the working group begin by exploring existing available services for residents suffering from mental health problems and substance abuse.
Their next meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 17 at 7 p.m. The agenda is to discuss the next steps of the working group. Time will be allowed for public participation.
