A workshop planned for Saturday in Pasadena aims to destigmatize mental health in African American/Black communities.
The workshop on Black mental and physical health will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, both in-person and via livestream.
Called “Mental and Physical Health, Wellness and Stigma in the Black Community,” the event is free, and those wanting to attend in person will receive the workshop location after registering online.
Attendees will hear community leaders share wisdom about mental health and wellness, and will be able to participate in a variety of healing stations — including massage, African dancing, yoga and therapeutic art. The workshop is part of Empowering Black Families, a free monthly series focused on decreasing stigma surrounding mental health issues and increasing awareness of healthy coping strategies.
It also will provide community members with supportive resources and services for healing. The event is family-friendly, and food and drinks will be served. Participants who have their own yoga mats and supplies are encouraged to bring them if they wish to participate in the restorative yoga portion of the event. Yoga supplies will be provided to the first 15 registrants in need of supplies.
Pasadena-based organizations Therapeutic Play Foundation and the Black Mental Health Task Force are working with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health to host the monthly workshops.
The Therapeutic Play foundation is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting children, families and communities through education, art, and play. The organization aims to decrease racial disparities in accessing self-care opportunities and wellness resources.
The Black Mental Health Taskforce is a coalition of organizations and individuals working in mental health who have united during the pandemic to support Black mental health and wellness.
